Milk Production in Argentina: Stagnation.
01.07.2009
Hello Bruce
You are right in your figures. But, due to a severe drought + the
desincentive from the National Government, in the last 5 years one third
of parlours have close they doors. Of course this means that the remaining parlours are bigger and more
productive. But with the current low milk price, the important drought,
the increase of grains price and the "Government help", these have paved
the way to a future fall. And if it's not a fall in a medium term, it
will not be growing as you can see in many other countries like Brazil
or China, were it seems that they have clear minds.
There is a very important example these days: the biggest Dairy Industry
in Argentina: La Serenisima (from Mastellone's family), have been paying
extra money to milk producers in the last few years according to
Government request. The same Government, didn't let La Serenisima to
increase prices to consumer. Therefore, they have been loosing money
until this month were the owner said that they will sell their company
to Danone.
Recently, the former and current President of Argentina was in
Mastellone's
premises with the Press, saying that they will give money to save the
company.
Was this necessary?
